Wood bats didn't keep Nick Brandon and Noah from going deep in Berkshire. Each player added to their homerun totals. The Ducks played a terrific tounament going undefeated and taking the Championship.
Noah Kuilan went 5 strong giving up one run with AJ Verga coming in for the 6th and dominating the Liverty Bats. Select bats have come alive in this one( maybe it was the wood) but each player contributed with big hits like Griffin Karp who was huge at the plate and on the mound. All in All a great weekend for the boys.
Congrats on Championship #3 !!!!
12u Xpress take Beaver Valley Red
to the end in Finals at
Moe's Southwest Grill, Stars, Stripes and Strikes,
Sports at the Beach
The Final had a little bit of everything. The Ducks jumped out to a 4 - 1 lead in the first. Julian Almonte was keeping the BV team off balance. BV and the ducks chipped and bombed away, with a total of 7 HRs in the final, 3 for the Ducks, 2 by Pete Montana and 1 by Erik Abrego.
It would have been 8 HRs, but Ducks left fielder, Julian Almonte scaled the left center field wall, and robbed what would have been a 2 run home run to end the 4th inning. Erik Abrego then hit a 3 run home run in the bottom of the 4th, which BV center fielder went up the wall and got a glove on, but the ball was just out of his reach. That brought the Ducks within 2 runs, 11-9.
In the top of the 5th, BV tacked on a few runs, but Joe Wozny came in and literally blow away the middle of the BV lineup to stop the threat, lighting up the radar gun on the score board at 70+ MPH.
Pete Montana hit his 2nd of two homeruns in the finals in the 6th, but inthe end the Ducks would come up a little short.
The finals was the 2nd time that weekend the Ducks played BV red. The first game ended with the Ducks on the short side of a 4-1 contest. Julian Almonte pitched a masterful 5 innings striking out 7 BV batters and allowing only 3 runs.
In all the games against Beaver Valley were terrific. It was a great opportunity to play a nationaly recognized team and compete at that level. Perfect Game has Beaver Valley Red ranked in the top #10 of all Mid-Atlantic teams. The Ducks certainly held their own and pushed BV to their limits. Hats off to a great BV team, and we look forward to seeing them again.
SPORTS AT THE BEACH HIGHLIGHTS
There were many highlights this past weekend.
In game one of the round robin, homeruns were hit by John Munoz, Erik Abrego, Pete Montana and Julian Almonte. The Ducks put up 12 hits and 14 runs, on their way to a quick 1-0 record in the tournament.
Shane Roetheli pitched 4 innings for the complete game shortened by run rule. He struck out 2 and needed only 53 pitches for the 14 batters he faced to lock down his first victory of the season. Awesome job Shane, nice outing.
The ducks had a great game against the Bonnie Robins. The Ducks defeated the Bonnies (then 2-0 in the tournament) to earn their #2 seed position. Joe Arabia came in to throw 2 and 2/3"s scoreless innings as the Ducks just kept adding up the runs.
Homeruns were hit by T.J. Wachter (9 on the season for the 12u xpress) and by Phil Gerard who got the privilege of trotting around the bases for the first time this year. Congrats to Phil on HR #1.
Erik Abrego had a terrific weekend, both at the plate and behind it. Erik was as usual, great behind the plate, blocking and keeping runners from advancing. At the plate, he had himself a great weekend also, including 3 HRs and 9 RBIs. Erik had the team's lone RBI in the first game against Beaver Valley Red and had the last of his 3 homeruns in the final against Beaver Valley as well. Erik went 2 - 4 with a walk, HR and 4 RBIs against the top ranked BV squad.
In all the Ducks left the yard 12 times in 5 games, with Erik Abrego(3), Pete Montana(3) and Julian Almonte(2), John Munoz, Bryce Losee, Phil Gerard, and T.J. Watcher all with 1 HR apiece.
Newcomer Matt Franco added to the Ducks run totals over the weekend with 2 strong ABs and 2 walks and 2 RBIs. Welcome aboard Matt.
Great weekend of baseball and sun, once Hurricane Arthur left town.. :)
